In my work as a therapist, my focus is to help individuals recognize the patterns in their lives that may unintentionally hold them back and keep them from living the life they desire. This process involves slowing down and looking within. It is also an opportunity to develop a balanced approach to life and flexibility to cope with life's expected and unexpected stressors.

For athletes, I have observed that many of them tend to keep their foot on the gas pedal, constantly pushing forward without taking the time to pause, reflect, or even ease off the accelerator. The sports and performance culture often emphasizes an unwavering commitment to relentless progress and perfection, leaving little room for breaks. Unfortunately, this "grindset" can lead athletes towards feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and burned out. It perpetuates the belief that if you are not working 24/7, your competitors will seize your opportunities (a belief that can create excessive guilt, shame, and low self-esteem).

My Focus

While I recognize the value of this competitive drive, we have to also understand its potential pitfalls. If athletes are not careful, they risk burning out or overwhelming their body's capacity to achieve greatness. That's why, as an athlete-focused counsellor, my aim is to help you find balance. In our work, it begins by connecting you to an intrinsically meaningful aim. From there, we develop an approach that considers multiple pathways to reach your goals. Don’t worry, we still prioritize pushing your limits but while also taking care of your body and mind.

In our work together, I approach athletes with the same principles that guide my work with anyone else. The main difference is that I am mindful of the unique journey you have chosen, one that is akin to climbing a treacherous mountain. I understand the mindset required to reach the summit, just as a coach guides your craft or a trainer supports your physical training. By raising awareness of the backdrop of this epic journey, we can help you experience the joy of achievement while nurturing a profound love for your sport and what it means to you.

How it All Works

In our collaborative partnership, we will employ evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to your specific needs. This may include mindfulness practices, emotion-focused therapies, behavioural interventions/practices, and other approaches proven effective in fostering balance, resilience, focus, and overall well-being.

Lastly, I understand the stigma that often surrounds mental health in the realm of sports, but I want to emphasize that seeking support is not a sign of weakness; it is a proactive step towards realizing your full potential.
